Dixie

Located in the W12 district within the southeastern portion of Mississauga, Dixie is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods. Named in honor of Dr. Beaumont Dixie, who was a settler that paid for the Union Chapel to get refurbished in 1865, the neighborhood remains of great historical significance to this day.

Dixie Sites and Attractions

Although the Dixie area does not have as many sites and attractions as some of the other neighborhoods in Mississauga, the neighborhood still has several buildings and structures remaining as reminders of its long history. Some of these include:

Union Chapel – multi-denominational church founded in 1816
Cherry Hill – house built in 1822 on Silvercreek Boulevard that now serves as a restaurant

Union Chapel, which was originally built from logs but was replaced by a stone church in 1837, can still be seen in its original location. Similarly, Cherry Hill can still be seen where it was originally built by Joseph and Jane Silverthorne. The Silverthornes were the first to visit the tavern built by Philip Cody, who arrived in the area in 1807 and was one of the area’s first settlers.

Living in Dixie

Dixie is considered to be one of the quieter neighborhoods within the city of Mississauga, but the area still offers many of the same conveniences and amenities found in other neighborhoods. Some of the condos available for purchase in Dixie include:

AyA Tower – observation tower originally built by an elevator manufacturer in order to test products, which know houses a corporate reception area and housing
Rockwood Village – condo community featuring luxurious housing options
The Capri Condo – contemporary condos featuring an open layout and high ceilings

Getting around the Dixie neighborhood is also made easier by the Dixie GO Station located south of Dundas Street East on Dixie Road. So, if you are interested in living in a quieter section of Mississauga while still being located near to the conveniences the city has to offer, Dixie might be the neighborhood for you.
